Planetary Nebulae

Some of the most gorgeous, ghostly, and variable objects in the universe are planetary nebulae.  They are all formed in a similar process, as a low-mass star (like our Sun) sheds it’s outer layers of gas and dust, heating them to a glow as they disperse over hundreds of millions of years.  A few Billion years from now, the Sun will undergo the same major state change.  When this happens, perhaps other species in the far future will gaze upon it and marvel at its beauty. One of the difficulties in studying a planetary nebula is measuring it’s distance from...

Let’s Watch a 10Km Asteroid Hit Us!

Enjoy this great little video about an asteroid hit as viewed by a dinosaur on ancient Earth.  The one in the video is 10Km wide and it’s the size of the one that killed the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous-Paleogene period 66 Million Years ago.  For reference, the Asteroid BL86 that passed by us this week was 300Km wide, a true killer! Sadly there’s no explosion, but hey, if we were able to see it we would be instantly vapourized so we wouldn’t be watching it anyway.

Another Big Asteroid will Fly Past Earth: Why does this keep Happening?

It seems that in recent years, asteroids have been flying past Earth with increasing frequency.  Does it mean that more asteroids are coming around? Is it the beginning of the end? Will one of them hit us soon and doom us all? Probably not, but there’s always a chance. It’s almost certain that the reason we’ve been able to find so many new asteroids, and especially near-Earth asteroids, is because of the technology increase in Astronomy the past few years.  New telescopes and tracking methods exist with the sole purpose of finding near-Earth asteroids, somewhat of an early warning system...
