That image resulted in a ton of new galaxy discoveries.  Most of these new galaxies were once hidden beyond the Andromeda galaxy, but with the super high resolution image, astronomers and the public were able to look straight through and see far more distant objects. When you think of a nebula forming stars, it’s hard to imagine how large it is. Most nebulae form hundreds or even thousands of stars before being blown away by the young stellar winds. The Most Powerful Supernova Ever

We just saw it.  Another record breaker.  This incredible explosion of a massive dying star is the brightest supernova ever observed.  You may think you get how big this explosion was, but it was brighter than collective brightness of all the 400 Billion stars in the Milky Way. Navigating the Cosmic Ocean

15 Years of ISS Astronauts

46 Billion Pixels of the Universe

192 Gigabytes.  One picture.  And I thought the 4 GB Andromeda shot was impressive (okay it still is). Why should a galaxy have bluish spiral arms dotted with red patches and dark lanes.  Why should it have a central region that is yellow and spherical rather than flat? Big Discovery Close to Home

I see so many amazing discoveries from educational institutions around the world, as they do cutting edge research in a variety of space-related fields.  But I am truly excited when a discovery is made close to home, at a university here in Ontario, Canada.  A PhD candidate from Queen’s University named Matt Schultz has discovered the first ever massive binary star in which both stars have magnetic fields, a star called epsilon Lupi.
